Domain Registration / Expiry 'scams'

A number of NewNet customers have reported receiving letters headed 'Domain Expiry Notice, typically from organisations such as:
- Domain Registry Services
- Domain Registry of Europe
- Domain Registry of America
The letters list the customer domain and suggest that the domain is about to expire and that prompt action should be taken to ensure continued use of the name. A payment section is included with an invitation to send a sum (typically £60) to the Domain Registry to ensure continued use.
All customers are advised to beware. The companies appearing to send these notices, similar to that above, have no relationship with NewNet. Domain renewal notices will only come to customers from NewNet - any other notice or invitation should be ignored.
Typically, letters or notices are sent out to domain registrants some time before their domain is due for renewal amd suggest that the domain owner may lose their internet domain unless payment is made. The letter/notice suggests that it is from the domain registry for the named domain and demands payment many times greater than would be charged by NewNet. Any payment made in repsonse to these 'invitations' is unlikely neither to be returned nor to be used to renew or transfer a domain. Country Trading Standards offices are well aware of the 'scam' being operated and actions are now being taken against perpetrators.
In some cases letters have been sent to companies inviting them to 'pre-register' for European .eu domains.
If you are in any doubt about any document relating to any domain that you own, or may be considering owning, please contact NewNet Hosting department.
