Connecting an Apple Mac (MacOS X) to a Broadband service

Please note: USB modems are not recommended for use with Apple Mac systems. We recommend that routers are connected to the Apple Mac via the ethernet connection.

Apple MAC (MacOS X) Installation

Before you start, please take a few minutes to check the following:

A. Have you received notification that your Broadband line is ready?
All NewNet customers will be notified to the email address provided at time of order

B. Does your Router pack contain the following items?

  1. Voyager 2100 Series Router
  2. Microfilters (2 supplied)
  3. Yellow Ethernet cable - used to connect the router to your computer
  4. Grey line cord - used to connect the router to a microfilter
  5. Mains Power Adapter

If any parts are missing please contact our Broadband Team on: 0845 684 0684

STEP 1 - Connecting your Broadband Router

Ensure your computer is turned on and fully functional

Close all applications and ensure that any Anti-Virus/Firewall software is turned off

1.1 Disconnect your phone line from the wall socket

1.2 Plug one of the Microfilters into your telephone wall socket

1.3 Re-connect your telephone cable into the socket on the Microfilter clearly marked "Phone"

Note: you will need to plug a Microfilter into every telephone wall socket that has analogue devices connected to it, such as telephones, faxes, modems and some digital television services before proceeding to the next step.

1.4 Next connect one end of the grey line cable into the black socket of the Microfilter labelled "DSL"

1.5 Connect the other end of the grey line cable into socket labelled "DSL" which can be found at the back of the Broadband Router

1.6 Plug one end of the yellow Ethernet cable into Ethernet "Port 1" located at the back of the Broadband Router

Connect the other end into the Ethernet Port of your Apple MAC

1.7 Plug the Mains Power Adapter into the back of your router (socket marked "Power"), then plug the other end of the Mains Power Adapter into the nearest mains socket

1.8 Press the power button on the back of the router to switch it on. The Power light on the front will turn eventually turn from red to green

1.9 Wait until the DSL Light on the front of the router stops flashing and goes solid green.

STEP 2 - Connecting your Apple MAC

2.0 Make sure that you have connected the Apple Mac to the router using a suitable (RJ45) ethernet network cable (see 1.6 above)

2.1 Go to the Apple Menu in the upper left-hand corner of the screen and select "System Preferences."

2.2 Within the "System Preferences" window, select "Network."

2.3 The Network Window will display your network settings. If no location is shown, this can be set.

At the 'Show' selector, select the 'Built in Ethernet' connection and the 'TCP/IP' tab (click on the tab to select)

For the first connection to a router, set the 'Configure IPv4' selector to 'Using DHCP'

The Apple Mac should acquire an IP address from the router - the addresses acquired should be shown - IP Address, Subnet Mask and Router address.

2.4 After you are finished, click "Apply Now" and the settings will be saved.

To connect to the router and to enter your Broadband username and Password, open a web browser (Safari, Mozilla Firefox etc.) and enter the router address into the URL address bar of the browser. The browser should now show the opening page to the router.

Follow the router manufacturer's instructions to enter your ADSL Broadband username, password and other settings as supplied.

Congratulations!

You are now connected to NewNet Broadband.

3.0 If you have been provided with a specific range of static IP addresses, you may decide to allocate an individual address to your MAC.

To apply a specific IP address to your computer, return to the Network window and select 'Configure IPv4' to 'Set Manually' and then enter the required IP address, Subnet Mask and Router address in the boxes provided.

NewNet DNS servers can be entered as 212.87.64.7 and 212.87.64.10
