Installing Dial-up Networking

You WILL need your NT4 installation media (probably a CD) to complete this installation.

The first thing you have to do, is to install Dial-up Networking. To do this, double-click on the 'My Computer' icon at the top of your desktop.

Double-click the 'Dial-up Networking' icon If you have not installed it before, you should be presented with ...

Click 'Install' on this window. This will install Dial-up Networking onto your PC. You will then be required to apply the service pack again to update Dial-up Networking. After Dial-up Networking is installed you should be presented with a warning that the phone book is empty

Configuring Dial-up Networking

Click OK to add an entry

You are asked to name your connection. You can call it anything you like but we suggest calling it NewNet. After you have entered the name of the dial-up connection, you should click the 'Next' button.

In the 'Server' window you should click the two top tick boxes. This is very important as it determines how your details will be sent on to NewNet when you try to connect. Click the 'Next' button which should take you to the 'Phone Number' window.

You should enter the phone number you need to dial to connect to NewNet. For most users this is 0845 684 0044 and this is what you should use unless instructed otherwise. Click 'Next' - this will take you to the 'Serial Line Protocol' window.

In this screen you are able to specify the type of protocol to use with the connection, you should check the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) radio button. Click 'Next', this will show the 'Login Script' window.

Click on the radio button for 'None' and click 'Next'

If you know your static IP address enter it here, otherwise leave it as shown with four zero's. Click 'Next' to bring up the 'Name Server Addresses' window.

Enter the DNS server address of 212.87.64.10 in the DNS Server box. Click 'Next'

Click 'Next' to finish the setup. You should be presented with a 'Dial-Up Networking' window.

On this screen you should click the 'More' button, select the 'Edit entry and modem properties'.

After you have selected the 'Edit entry and modem properties' option, you should be presented with a 'Edit Phonebook Entry' window. Click the tab that says 'Server'.

Make sure that you have exactly what is shown in the screenshot above, then click TCP/IP Settings.

When you open this screen, there may only be a single DNS server address shown. You should do the following:

Enable 'Server assigned IP address'.
Enable 'Specify name server addresses'.
Enter 212.87.64.10 as the 'Primary DNS' and 212.87.64.11 as the 'Secondary DNS'.

Click the 'OK' button until you are back to the screen where it says Dial at the bottom of the window. Click 'Dial' - this should bring up the following screen.

Enter your 'User name' and login 'Password'. This information will be shown on the dial-up instructions sent to you when you joined us and is case sensitive. It is VERY important to note that there should be nothing in the 'Domain' field. If there is something entered in this field, the connection attempt may fail. Click 'OK' and you should start to connect to NewNet.
